Design: the "connective tissue"

It was in the mid-eighties when I discovered that the activity I now call "design" had a name, and that you could do it for a living. Despite having spent almost 30 years involved in it one way or another, to this day I freeze for a moment when someone asks me "What do you do?" Either this means I spent a long (long) time doing something I don't understand (and considering I made a decent living at it that would be remarkable in itself), or I don't trust in my ability to convey the nature of it in a few words. Instead I try to find an easier, faster, more acceptable way to handle the question and move on with the rest of our lives, secretly resenting the fact that I failed, once again. The problem is that "Design" is a term open to a variety of interpretations, and everybody expects it to get more specific, or else they'll attach to it whatever preconceived notion they have about it. Mirrors

What would we do without mirrors? Do you ever think about it? We're so used to the fact that we can look at ourselves as if we're watching someone else, that we take it for granted. What we don't always realize though is that we use other kinds of mirrors too, let's call them "non visual" mirrors. What I mean with this is that sometimes we use our friends, or people we know (or sometimes even people we don't know) as a mirror to better understand things in our life that we have trouble understanding or handling. This can take different forms, the most normal being that you just talk to your friends about a problem, and hear their point of view on it: they can provide an outside perspective on something that is harder to see for you, just like a mirror helps you see parts of yourself that others can see but you cannot. Then, moving things one step beyond, sometimes there are people that we're particularly close to, or that know us very well, and ...

Beauty

-Edit: Last night, for the first time since I posted this, I read it again. It's awful, poorly written and boring. I don't know what I was thinking. I would delete it, but I'll leave it up as a reminder: the best thing about mistakes is that you can learn something from them- You have to be beautyful. To be happy. At all costs. This is one of the messages that is hammered daily into our heads, It triggers behaviours that sustain several multy million dollar industries. The thing is, I could almost agree with the core principle: the world, today's world in particular, needs more Beauty. Unforunately, Beauty is a concept that is difficult to frame, hard to measure, and challenging, at best, to manufacture. No need to worry though, because there are plenty of people out there that are making our life easier by breaking the code of Beauty, to give it back to us in simple formulas that will guarantee success (and by pure chance, can all be purchased, I guess we real...
